The University of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria was the venue for the kick off meeting of the STRATUM project (3D Decision Support Tool for Brain Tumor Surgery), coordinated by the University Institutes of Applied Microelectronics (IUMA) and Biomedical and Health Research (iUIBS). This event, which took place on 26 and 27 February at the ULPGC Rectorate building, constituted the official start of the project, funded by the European Commission through the Horizon Europe 2023 Programme with 10.7 million euros.
Prof. Gustavo M. Callico (ULPGC), and the main promoter of the project proposal, Dr. Himar Fabelo (FIISC), led this meeting where the bases and objectives of the project were established as well as the initial steps carried out until the moment. During the meeting, the main partners of the consortium discussed the roles and responsibilities of each entity involved, as well as the deadlines and objectives of the project. Among the participating partners are the Fundación Canaria Instituto de Investigación Sanitaria de Canarias (FIISC) belonging to the Canarian Health Service, Technische Universiteit Eindhoven (The Netherlands), Karolinska University Hospital of Sweden, Centro Supercomputacional de Barcelona, SAS UPMEM of France, Universitá degli Studi di Pavia (Italy), Universidad Politécnica de Madrid, Hospital Universitario 12 de Octubre, Rheinland-Pfalzische Technische Universitat of Germany, OPTOMIC Spain and European Citizen Science Association of Germany.
This meeting represents the start of the collaborative, interdisciplinary process to develop a 3D imaging system based on artificial intelligence technology, with the goal of reaching TRL7 technology maturity level. This revolutionary tool is expected to provide neurosurgeons with the ability to make informed and accurate decisions during surgical interventions, thus improving the care and treatment of brain tumour patients.
