STRATUM Project Coordinators participate in the 12th Framework Program Conference in Spain

Dr. Gustavo Marrero Callicó and Dr. Himar Fabelo Gómez, coordinators of the STRATUM project, took part in the 12th Framework Program Conference in Spain, organised by the CDTI in collaboration with the Ministry of Science, Innovation, and Universities, the European Commission, the City Council of Oviedo, and Sekuens. The event focused on reviewing the progress of Horizon Europe and exploring strategies to enhance the participation of Spanish institutions in this key European Union program.

STRATUM: Innovation in Neurosurgery

STRATUM aims to develop a clinically validated 3D decision support tool for brain surgery guidance and diagnostics, leveraging multimodal data processing through artificial intelligence algorithms. This tool will be integrated as an energy-efficient, point-of-care computing system, enabling real-time, precise diagnostics and surgical decision-making. STRATUM is poised to revolutionize neurosurgery by enhancing accuracy and safety in complex procedures.

Background of the STRATUM Project Coordinators

Gustavo Marrero Callicó, a Full Professor at the University of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria (ULPGC), holds a European Ph.D. in Telecommunications Engineering and has authored over 250 scientific publications. He has participated in 28 research projects, including those funded by the European Commission, and is a Senior Member of IEEE. He coordinated the European HELICoiD project and leads research in hyperspectral systems for real-time cancer detection. Marrero has collaborated with renowned institutions such as the University of Tromsø and the University of Texas at Dallas and has served as an editor for numerous prestigious scientific journals.

Himar Fabelo Gómez, who earned his Ph.D. in Telecommunication Technologies from ULPGC, has distinguished himself in both academic and professional realms. He received the Extraordinary Doctorate Award and has contributed to major European projects like HELICoiD and WARIFA. Currently, he serves as the principal investigator for STRATUM and has published over 54 scientific articles in high-impact journals. His research focuses on hyperspectral imaging (HSI) and AI algorithms for advanced medical diagnostics. Fabelo has received notable accolades, such as the Robert F. Wagner Award for best student paper, and has completed research stays at international institutions like the University of Texas at Dallas.

During the conference, Gustavo Marrero Callicó and Himar Fabelo Gómez presented the progress of STRATUM during the poster exhibition and participated in strategic meetings to foster international collaborations. The presence of STRATUM at this event underscores its pivotal role in medical and technological innovation, positioning its coordinators as key figures in European biomedical research.
